How to Start a Blog in 2022: The Ultimate Guide

It’s 2022 and you want to start a blog. How do you go about it? .

Many people ask, Can I Start a Blog Without Any Technical (Coding or Writing) Experience? You can start a blog without any technical experience. It definitely helps to have an idea of how blogs work, how WordPress works and how SEO can influence your success but it isn’t mandatory.

In this article, we will discuss the best ways to get started and all the steps you need to take before you write your first blog post.

The first step is to choose a blog hosting provider. There are many different options out there, so it can be difficult to decide which one is right for your own blog.

Next, you need to choose a niche for your blog. This can be anything from fashion to travel to cooking.

Once you’ve chosen your niche, it’s time to set up and install WordPress and install some essential plugins and a blog theme.

Then you’ll need to do some extensive keyword research to launch and run your own successful blog.

After that, it’s time for the fun part: creating content! You’ll need to come up with a content plan and make sure you’re publishing regularly.

Last but not least, promote your blog! Spread the word that you’ve started a blog, on Facebook groups and other social media sites and get people to read your content.

Let’s recap what we will discuss in this article:

  1. Hosting Providers
  2. WordPress Installation
  3. Themes
  4. Plugins
  5. Google Analytics Account & Google Search Console (GA & GSC)
  6. Niche Ideas
  7. Keyword Research & Tools
  8. Content Plan
  9. Content Tools
  10. Promotion

Let´s start our blogging journey with our recommendations for hosting providers:

Hosting providers:

A hosting company is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for a website or blog post to be viewed on the internet.

There are many different types of web hosting, but we recommend shared hosting for most bloggers starting. Shared hosting is when you share a server with other websites. This is more affordable than other types of web hosting and is a good option for most bloggers starting.

I would personally only recommend two web hosting providers if you are starting with a new blog. Ionos (my hosting company) & Bluehost. See below for an overview of both hosting platforms.

Below is a list of hosting companies that we recommend for your blog hosting account:

Bluehost

Overall, Bluehost is a fantastic choice for novices since it offers everything you’ll need to begin using WordPress, including a free domain name and automatic WordPress installation, as well as a free drag-and-drop page builder and comprehensive step-by-step instructions for every stage of the process.

Bluehost has a broad range of service offerings, including WordPress hosting, shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and multi-tiered pricing plans. We believe that most users will enjoy the Bluehost experience with such a selection of products.

The benefits greatly outweigh the drawbacks, and it’s without a doubt a good site hosting service to investigate—especially for WordPress users.

Ionos

IONOS is a trustworthy web host. With an excellent uptime of 99.8 percent, it provides daily site backups, anti-spam protection, and a slew of other useful services in its hosting packages.

IONOS’ main drawback is that it’s aimed at businesses, and not individuals. IONOS allows companies to scale rapidly and efficiently by providing a variety of tools such as email marketing, web-based CRM, social media management, search engine optimization (SEO), online sales tracking and reporting – all on one platform.

Installing WordPress

The easiest way to do this is to choose a hosting company that has WordPress pre-installed for you.

Nowadays, many WordPress-specific hosts will allow you to choose whether or not to install WordPress upon registration. That means you can get right to work on your WordPress blog after signing up for hosting. The issue of “how to set up WordPress” is no longer relevant in this scenario!

WordPress is a popular CMS that’s easy to use, especially if you’re familiar with it. WordPress sites are also simple to maintain because of its inherently simple nature.

Furthermore, many managed WordPress hosts will install WordPress for you ahead of time, but the pricing on those services may be more expensive.

Don’t worry if you’ve already chosen a different host. The majority of other hosts still make it simple to set up WordPress. However, you’ll need to press a few buttons.

If you are looking for a summary of how to install WordPress manually, here it is:

  1. Download the latest version of WordPress from wordpress.org
  2. Unzip the file and upload it to the public_html (or similar) directory
  3. Create MySQL Database and User
  4. Configure the wp-config.php file.
  5. Run the WordPress install

Themes

A WordPress blog theme is a set of templates, files, and stylesheets that define the look and feel of your blog.

You have two options when it comes to themes:

You have the option of choosing a free WordPress themes with restricted customization or purchasing a premium theme.

I recommend you pick a theme from Themeforest to get a nice looking theme for your blog.

Once you have purchased your blog theme, you can download the theme into a zipped folder. Save the folder somewhere on your computer. Then head over to WordPress.

Once in WordPress, go to the left side menu and click on “Appearance” then “Themes”.

Once there, you will see a “Add New” button at the top. Click on this and a new button will appear “Upload Theme”.

Here you can upload your zipped file. Once uploaded you can simply follow the instructions given by your new theme.

Plugins:

Plugin 1: RankMath or Yoast SEO (both SEO focused plugins)

RankMath

RankMath is a great SEO plugin for WordPress because it is very user-friendly. You can easily add meta titles and descriptions, optimize your website for social media and track your progress with ease. With RankMath, there is no need to hire an expensive SEO specialist or spend hours reading tutorials. Simply install the plugin and follow the instructions. You will be able to see an improvement in your website’s ranking in no time.

There are many other great features of RankMath, such as the ability to bulk edit titles and descriptions, the option to set canonical URLs, automatic hreflang tags, and much more. If you are serious about SEO and want to improve your website’s ranking, then RankMath is the plugin for you.

Yoast SEO

Yoast SEO is a great SEO plugin for WordPress because it makes optimizing your website for search engines easy. It has a user-friendly interface that allows you to configure all the important settings with just a few clicks. Yoast SEO also allows you to fine-tune your website’s title and meta tags, which are two of the most important factors in ranking high in search results. In addition, Yoast SEO automatically generates an XML sitemap of your website, which makes it easier for search engines to find and index all your pages. Overall, Yoast SEO is a powerful and easy-to-use plugin that can help you improve your website’s SEO and get more traffic from search engines.

If you’re serious about getting more traffic from Google and other search engines, then you need to install Yoast SEO on your WordPress website. It’s the most popular SEO plugin for WordPress, with over a million active installations.

Plugin 2: Ultimate Addons for Gutenberg

Ultimate Addons for Gutenberg is an excellent plugin for the Gutenberg block editor. Advanced blocks will help you design entire web pages without having to use any third-party plugins or codes.

Because hefty builders constantly have an effect on web performance, it provides a lot of possibilities for each block to load quickly. The plugin has been created to be fast, effective, and adaptable.

This is a very user-friendly platform designed to help you produce, update and keep track of your products.

Plugin 3: Short Pixel

If you have a significant number of images, consider using Shortpixel’s Adaptive Images. It is possible to reduce them as well.

Because the majority of a website’s weight is comprised of pictures, and every additional second it takes to load loses clients and conversions, it is clearly worth it. It’s a simple plugin to use that takes only a few minutes to install and leaves no work for you. If you want to go back to your original pictures, all it takes is unpacking the plugin and deleting it from your WordPress site.

In addition, their support staff is excellent, and there are many people on wordpress.org who can vouch for that.

It’s a must-have plugin that helps boost the speed of your website, improve your Google rankings, and drive more people to it. And if you combine it with high-quality hosting like Cloudways, the results will be even more spectacular.

Plugin 4: Mammoth .dox converter

This plugin enables you to easily transfer content from Microsoft Word without losing formatting.

If you copy and paste material into the WordPress post editor, sometimes it causes significant formatting loss. headers, tables, bolding, italics, and lists have all been reported to disappear.

The new Mammoth.docx converter provides a solution! The plugin allows you to upload content created in Microsoft Word and have it converted automatically into HTML and pasted into your post editor for you to publish online.

The plugin is simple to use. At the bottom of your post editor, you’ll find an option to utilize the Mammoth.docx converter. To upload a Word document, click “choose file.”

Plugin 5: BulletProof Security

BulletProof Security isn’t the flashiest or most feature-rich option out there, but it does its job and is free, making it well worth a look. A video introduction to how to use the plugin once installed on your site is available on the main page.

The plugin has a malware scanner, full, partial, or manual database backup, .htaccess protection, login monitoring, and idle session logout, as well as numerous other features.

BulletProof Security Pro has a bigger brother, BulletProof Security Pro, which costs $69.95 and allows you to install it on an unlimited amount of websites, gives free lifetime upgrades, and of course comes with many features not available in the basic version, such as Heads Up Dashboard Status Display and a set of 16 mini plugins known as “Pro Tools”

Plugin 6: WP Rocket

WP Rocket is the best thing you can buy for your money if you’re seeking for a reliable and quick solution to keep your website fast and optimized.

Although they don’t have a free trial or a free version, you can rest safe in the knowledge that it is one of the most straightforward and efficient WordPress caching plugins available. It also includes useful add-on features that make website optimization much simpler.

If you’re still unsure about whether or not to buy a plugin after reading this, take advantage of their 14-day money back guarantee.

Overall, given their capabilities and customer service, I’d strongly suggest WP Rocket to anybody searching for a dependable WordPress caching plugin.

Google Analytics Plugin or Account & Google Search Console

If you’re going to devote time, effort, and money into search engine optimization, you’ll need the right tools to track your progress and calculate your return on investment.

Fortunately, Google itself offers world-class software to monitor your web traffic, including that originating from organic search. While many of these tools are free to use, the biggest organizations may pay for premium versions that include extra features and can handle larger traffic volumes.

The first and most important tool, Google Analytics, keeps track of your website’s traffic in great detail, including where it came from, what the visitors did on your site, and how well the traffic converted into registrations, purchases, or other types of transactions.

The second tool, Google Search Console, is a collaboration between Google Analytics and Google Search Console. Whereas Google Analytics informs you about your website’s performance, Google Search Console tells you how well your site performs in the search index of Google. This is particularly beneficial when it comes to creating campaigns to boost your website’s SEO success.

Keyword Research & Tools:

Keywords on your website let Google and other search engines know what your company does and sells. This increases the likelihood that when potential customers search for items or services offered on your blog pages, their search results will likely include your website.

Using the correct keywords in articles, blog entries, or product descriptions might help you rank in search engine results and attract visitors and new leads to your website for months or even years after you’ve posted them. Your organic traffic can outperform sponsored traffic or advertising when you rank for a keyword that matches the content of your page.

How to search for keywords:

  • Make a list of broad topics relevant to your business
  • Expand each topic with a list of phrases you think your customers use
  • Find related search terms
  • Analyze the strength of your keywords
  • Determine how you rank in your industry

There are tools that help you do the above by simply adding the keyword you want to target. Two tools I have used for years are hrefs and semrush. Both are fantastic tools that do so much more than just keyword research.

Ahrefs

Advantages of Ahrefs over Semrush

  • You may perform keyword research for a range of search engines with Ahrefs, including Google and Bing. Semrush is only compatible with Google.
  • Ahrefs is somewhat easier to use than Semrush, and it offers more ‘at-a-glance’ information.
  • With Ahrefs, it’s a lot easier to conduct broken link analysis.
  • You can have as many people as you like access your accounts at Ahrefs; however, Semrush restricts user accounts to one per plan (with SEMRUSH, the price of extra seats varies depending on the plan you subscribe to).
  • Ahrefs lets you work with an infinite number of websites as long as you can verify domain ownership.
  • Adding extra user accounts with Ahrefs is less expensive.

SEMrush

Advantages of Semrush over Ahrefs

  • When it comes to the quantity of reports you may access each day, Semrush is considerably more generous. If you want to do a lot of backlink or keyword research on a daily basis, then Semrush is far superior value than Ahrefs.
  • If you want a tool that covers both SEO and PPC, then SEMrush is a better option than Ahrefs. It provides a wealth of data about not only SEO but also PPC – if you’re looking for something that does both, it’s a superior choice than Ahrefs.
  • The Semrush “keyword intent” tool is ideal for determining your company’s most important keywords (or those most likely to result in conversions).
  • The program’s site auditing capabilities are more comprehensive and user-friendly.
  • Ahrefs is less effective at detecting and reporting on toxic links than SEMrush.
  • You’ll be able to deliver great link building campaigns without ever leaving the program with SEMrush’ CRM-style approach to outreach.

Content plan:

A content plan is a schedule of when you will publish new content and what that content will be. Brainstorming post ideas ahead of time can help you stay on track and avoid writer’s block. Editing your posts before you hit publish helps ensure that your readers see your best work. And finally, promoting your content after it goes live ensures that as many people as possible see it.

Creating a content plan is an important first step in any content marketing strategy. By taking the time to sit down and map out when you will publish new content and what that content will be, you can save yourself a lot of time and energy down the road.

There are a few key things to keep in mind when creating a content plan:

1. Decide on a posting schedule. This can be daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on your needs and resources.

2. Brainstorm post ideas. Jot down any and all ideas that come to mind- you can always edit them later.

3. Write and edit your posts. Again, it’s important to put your best foot forward and publish quality content.

4. Promote your content. Once your post is live, be sure to share it on social media and with any relevant email lists or forums.

By following these steps, you can create a content plan that will help you stay on track and produce quality content for your readers.

Content Tools:

Jasper.ai

You can use AI tools like Jasper to help you write your content. Jasper is a super useful tool, it can help come up with ideas for topics to write about, it can help do research on a given topic and provide information that could be used in the blog post, it can also help edit and revise the blog post.

Overall, using Jasper AI could save a lot of time and effort in writing a blog post.

SurferSEO

The Surfer is a new addition to my SEO toolbox. You may use Surfer to conduct a technical SEO audit and compare your content to those of other websites. You can compare things like the number of words, backlinks, and keywords and phrases utilized. Surfer saves you hours of effort that would otherwise have to be handled manually. It only takes a matter of seconds to get answers, making it easily worth the money.

Promotion:

When you start a blog, it’s important for people to know about it! If no one knows you’re making content, then you won’t get very far. This goes hand in hand with using social media to promote yourself.

There are many ways to promote your blog and get more traffic. Here are some of the most effective methods:

1. Share your content on social media

This is one of the best ways to get more eyeballs on your blog posts. Make sure to share your content on all the major social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also use social media ads to promote your blog posts to a wider audience.

2. Email subscribers

If you have a list of email subscribers, make sure to send them your latest blog post. This is a great way to get more people to read your content.

3. Guest post on other blogs

One of the best ways to get exposure for your blog is to guest post on other popular blogs in your niche. This will give you a chance to showcase your writing skills and get more people to visit your own blog.

4. Run paid ads

Paid advertising is another great way to get more traffic to your blog. You can run ads on search engines like Google or on social media platforms like Facebook. Paid ads can be a great way to get more people to read your blog posts.

Conclusion

If you’re thinking about starting a blog, these tips will help you get started on the right foot. Creating a content plan and using tools like Jasper and SurferSEO can save you time and effort in writing and promoting your blog. By following these steps, you can create a successful blog that will reach a wide audience.
